night. i can't think of a debate in the 20 years covering this where the gap between the two candidates was this wide. mitt romney turned in a strong performance and the president turned in an uneven performance. the disparity led to a perception that president obama lost the debate. if you look at the commentary, not from the right, but people who love barack obama, almost every one of them, every pundit was saying that he lost. some saying he lost decisively. some saying he lost so badly, it could cost him the election. to me, it's hyperbolic. it speaks to the fact mitt romney changed the narrative of the campaign. >> what does it mean, jim, for mitt romney. if we accept he won the night last night, how does he make it about more than one night and a turning point in the campaign? >> i can't emphasize how big last night was for mitt romney. you have to view it from the mitt romney that came into the debate. conservatives were down on him. his staff were down on him. donors were reluctant to give money to him. most thought he had no opportunity to win the race. he comes out of the deba

and see what we can find. this is what the country looked like in 2009. barack obama's first full year in office. every state that looks brown out here is a state where they were losing jobs at the time. some of them very bad. look at ohio over here. 10.6% unemployment. gradually over the next few years jobs come in education and health care and business services and retail. every state that is lighter in color where they are no longer losing jobs or, in some cases, gaining jobs. ohio, 7.2% unemployment now. that is better than the national average. the bureau of labor statistics says to make that happen, we, indeed, had to create a lot of jobs. how many? by their count? 4.4 million so far. but here is what is not mentioned much. 4.3 million were lost during the bad days. so the net gain is only about 125,000 and that falls short of the president's claim that he created 5 million jobs. it's just a little bit too much of a stretch. we have to call that claim false. even though many democrats will say in a heartbeat, look. he inherited a bad economy from george bush. many voters agree wi

president obama was trying to lay out the next four years than obama himself did up on the stage. i mean there was just time and again mitt romney managed to seize the advantage of appearing moderate, whether it was to do with saying he wasn't in favor of cutting all regulations, whether it was to do with the preexisting conditions, and allowing children, junior to stay on their parents plan. you name it. time and again whether it wasn't cutting $5 trillion in taxes he managed to move to the center and obama didn't come back and refute him saying listen that's not what you were saying during the course of the primary campaign. how are the american voters going to know which president they're after. how this they going to know which romney goes into the white house because what you're saying tonight governor is not what you've been saying during the course of the campaign. i didn't hear that message i just heard it now from the spin room from some of obama's campaign people. you didn't hear it from obama himself on the stage tonight. >> there's a difference between preserving your likabil

obama on his record over the last four years, taking on on the president over his failure to reduce the budget deficit, over job creation, over obamacare, over the regulation of wall street and dodd-frank. had some success in pulling the election back from a choice election as president obama wants to be about their visions going forward into a referendum on president obama's record in the first four years. mitt romney looked very comfortable and pleased to be on the stage. he knows that he only has a few weeks left to go to reverse president obama's lead. president obama on the other hand did not always look so pleased to be challenged the way romney was challenging him. he did not make any big mistakes and one of the questions coming out of this debate, as good as republicans feel and as middling as testimonies feel about this performance, did it really do enough to change the dynamic in the race.feel about this performance, did it really do enough to change the dynamic in the race. next week it's paul ryan and joe biden. and then two more presidential debates. we'll watch the pol
